Undated (1831-1834) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold. Kagin-8. Rarity-6+. With 75 G, Beaded Border. MS-63 PCGS. CAC.
This glistening and lustrous gold quarter eagle offers an impressive visual display and is handily one of the premier highlights of the Allan Collection. The centering is exacting, the strike is sharp, and the overall appeal bespeaks a finer grade long after the first glance. Broadly sweeping cartwheels adorn both sides along with splashes of fiery sunset orange iridescence that deepen in a bold light source. The same light source reveals some prooflike reflectivity in the fields. No marks of consequence can be detected by the unaided eye, and a loupe provides little fodder for discussion; just some faint hairlines on either side will be the reward for those who investigate closely. Indeed, this coin is not only the finest example of the variety certified by PCGS, it is the finest known example of Kagin-8! Close-in examination of this specimen provides a neat look into the workshop of the Bechtler family. The crudeness of the punch devices is a delight to behold in this day and age of homogenized perfection. For instance, a bold diagonal line can be seen within the 0 of the 20 on the obverse, and the crossbar of the G in 75.G. appears more like a faint engraver’s afterthought in the die than a part of the letter. Whether you appreciate this beauty at arm’s length or under low magnification, you will come away knowing that you have just seen something special, something that is liable to make all others of its kind seem blemished or diminished in some way. Such is the power of a special coin, and this is a special coin!
