Undated (1831-1834) C. Bechtler Gold Dollar. Kagin-1a. Rarity-8, Unique. 30 G., Plain Edge. EF-45 PCGS.
The soft violet-gold surfaces of this rarity enjoy bursts of rose and blue iridescence in a bold light source. Though evenly worn and not heavily marked, we must mention a few light flaws, perhaps even in the planchet when struck, around the G in 30 G as well as a tiny dent there that manifests itself as a swollen spot above the E in ONE on the reverse. Despite the aforementioned flaws, the overall appearance is solid for the assigned grade. Was this a distinctly planned issue with plain edge details or was this simply a case of “oops,” someone forgot to apply the edge reeding? As far as our experience, this is the only example of Kagin-1a known in any grade and in any collection. The importance of the lot cannot be understated, as once it is sold it could be many years before it makes another appearance in the auction arena – something to contemplate while you form your bidding strategy.

PCGS Population: 1; unlisted in any other grade.
