Undated (1834). C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-20. Rarity-5. With 134 G., Star. EF-45 PCGS.
The bright yellow gold surfaces of this lightly circulated half eagle exhibit pale olive highlights throughout, prooflike reflectivity in the protected design areas, and much retained luster in the design depths. A natural planchet flaw, as struck, engages the exact center of the reverse and the numeral 5. Marginally prooflike, the overall appearance of the present piece is more than tolerable, pocket-change hairlines and all. This lively specimen deserves more than just a passing glance at viewing time, and we expect to see several paddles in the air at lot time.

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD: at rim from 8 to 4 o’clock around, 134.G. at center, inverted five-pointed star beneath, 21 CARATS curves at rim beneath star.
Reverse: C: BECHTLER: AT RUTHERF: and star around, 5 at center, DOLLARS. curves below.

Die Alignment: about 260 degrees.

PCGS Population: 8; 45 finer (MS-61 finest).
