Undated (1842-1850). A. Bechtler $1 Gold. Kagin-24. Rarity-4. 27 G., 21 Carats. Plain Edge. Carolina Gold. MS-61 PCGS. CAC.
This pleasing specimen is smoky gold-gray face on, but a bold light source reveals a wealth of fiery sunset orange, lively crimson, and bright neon blue. The fields are mainly prooflike in appearance and display some obverse hairlines but precious few other disturbances. The reverse exhibits a thin horizontal planchet rift, as struck, from the rim at 9 o’clock across the right foot of the A and then to the bottom of the upright of the 1. A loupe provides evidence of some finer and much smaller horizontal riffs on this not-quite-ready-for-prime-time planchet. Some die flaws were present at the base of the 1 when struck, as plainly seen under low magnification. Very tiny and shallow saw-toothed dentils present at the rims in most places. Kagin-24 is perceived by specialists as the most readily available of all the various Bechtler issues of any denomination and from any family member. Indeed, there are those who consider it the most plentiful of all private and pioneer gold issues. All that aside, the present coin is in good standing in the eyes of PCGS, CAC, and in ours as well. This historic issue is often selected for type purposes for good reason. There are numerous Mint State grading events for the variety at PCGS and NGC, and hopefully they all represent separate coins and not resubmissions. Kagin-24 is a notch or so scarcer in Mint State than the Rarity-4 rating implies, and the end results from this lot should speak well of its overall quality and desirability.

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD. around rim from 8 to 4 o’clock, 27.G. at center, 21.C. at rim below.
Reverse: Numeral 1 at center, A.BECHTLER. arcs above, DOL: and a five-pointed star curve below.
Die Alignment: about 260 degrees.

PCGS Population: 14; 17 finer (MS-64 finest).
