Undated (1834-1837) C. Bechtler Gold Dollar. Kagin-4. Rarity-4. 28: G: Centered, Reversed N. MS-63 PCGS. CAC.
A deeply lustrous example with highly reflective prooflike fields that reveal their depth in a bright light source. The deep orange gold surfaces brighten considerably under a light and bursts of pale rose and blue iridescence make their visual presence noted. This attractive Bechtler dollar represents the second finest example of K-4 certified by PCGS; there are two grading events at the MS-64 level for the variety, and just the one, the present piece, at MS-63. K-4 is a fairly plentiful variety within the context of the series, and the Allan specimen offered here is near the very zenith of quality for the variety, a fact well worth considering when you plan your auction strategy. You may find numerous examples in lesser grades than here, but you won't find more than two in a finer grade, and they are no doubt in advanced collections as we write this.

This famous variety with the reversed N in ONE is now officially opened for further discussion, see below.

An intriguing numismatic conundrum presents itself when considering which way is right-side up on the reverse of K-4, the famous “Reversed N” variety. On the obverse, the star at the 9 o'clock position to the left of 28 has a solitary point facing upward with two points facing downward. The most prevalent school of thought for the reverse of this variety is that the N is reversed and the word DOLLAR represents the top of the reverse. If so, the star appears to the right of ONE and has two points facing upward, and only the N – which is punched over a correctly facing N that has been partly effaced from a seemingly rusted die – is reversed. However, and this is the writer's opinion, CAROLINA represents the top of the reverse. This places the star in the legend in the exact place it is on the obverse, 9 o'clock, with just its primary point facing upward and two points downward. With CAROLINA as the top, the entire word ONE is reversed! Let the discussions begin.

Obverse: BECHTLER RUTHERF: and a five-pointed star around, 28: G: evenly centered, nothing beneath.
Reverse: CAROLINA DOLLAR and a five-pointed star around, ONE reversed at center.
Die Alignment: either about 225 degrees or 315 degrees, depending on the reader's take on the “top of the coin” argument above.

PCGS Population: 1; 2 finer (both MS-64).
NGC Census: 1; MS-64.
