The first coin up from the amazing Allan Collection of Christoph Bechtler family gold is an early American treasure in its own right. The warm pale olive gold surfaces offer abundant luster and eye appeal. Here is a perfectly centered and evenly struck coin with full border dentils present on both sides – this issue is sometimes lacking in those areas. Slight swelling of the obverse die has occurred in this early state, though it is not yet severe enough to weaken the design elements as seen in later die states. Attentive viewers will be favorably impressed at first glance, as the virtual absence of any naked-eye marks is a definite plus that serves to define the overall quality offered here – and throughout the Allan Collection. We note that PCGS lists a dozen Mint State grading events for K-1, all of those crowded at the MS-61 to MS-63 level with no examples higher or lower on the scale. Notably, a half dozen examples of the variety are called MS-62 with a pair of MS-63 pieces (although we have only seen one of these) representing the finest certified for the variety. In our opinion – and reinforced by the CAC sticker – this is the second finest example of America's first gold dollar you will ever see.

Obverse: C. BECHTLER. RUTHERF: around, 30. G. at center, inverted blunt five-pointed star beneath.
Reverse: N: CAROLINA GOLD. DOLLAR. around, ONE at center.
Die Alignment: about 270 degrees.

PCGS Population: 6; 2 finer (both MS-63).
