Undated (1831-1834) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold. Kagin-9. Rarity-7. 75 G, With Star. EF-45 PCGS.
This warm olive-gold specimen spent a good deal of time in pocket change but to no apparent detriment. The eye appeal is substantial and the surfaces are unmarred by any unseemly blemishes. The reverse displays some natural planchet laminations and a natural planchet split at the H of NORTH, but other than a few light hairlines, that’s it for distractions. Varied shades of olive and pale sky blue engage the eye in a bold light source, and much original luster becomes apparent in the protected areas of the reverse. The design of K-9 is far less crowded and busy than that of K-8 above, seeming almost sparse by comparison. The Bechtler family made these coins to circulate and fulfill a need in commerce, not to win an art contest or to earn critical acclaim. This is the second finest example of K-9 currently known, as well as the second finest seen thus far by PCGS; that firm has not seen a Mint State coin, see below. Decades ago Walter Breen speculated that just four examples of Kagin-9 were extant, probably an accurate assessment at the time. Some 28 years later and the population for this rare variety has not increased greatly – it is still considered Rarity-7! The present rare variety is on more than just the reader’s wish list-want list, of that you can be certain. In fact, we suspect that serious bidders will force many players to put up or bow out when the bidding excitement begins. We hope you stay in until the end!
