Undated (1831-1834) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold. Kagin-5. Rarity-7. No 75 G, Fine Beads. AU-50 PCGS.
Deep olive-gray gold throughout the fields with brighter gold on the design elements. A bright light source brings out a sheen of royal blue iridescence. No marks adorn the obverse, even under low magnification, but at some long-ago time light vertical scratches were made at the center of the reverse; these have long since toned over and are fairly innocuous. Modestly off-center to the dexter side of the obverse with the beads near 9 o'clock mostly off the planchet; the reverse beads are evenly centered and completely on the planchet. The obverse beads are small, and the reverse beads are tinier yet. Curious letter punches were used in this variety along with K-6 and K-7 that follow. The A punch is without a crossbar and could very well be a small V inverted, while the Y punch is obviously a V with a broad base added. The present specimen is one of three grading events for the AU-50 grade at PCGS, and only one example of K-5 has fared better, grading AU-58 – there are no Mint State examples of the variety certified by that firm and one AU-58 at NGC. Only about a half dozen or so examples of this rare variety are thought to exist, and the Allan coin offered herein – formerly in the Clifford and Kagin Collections – is certain to bring out the best of competition among bidders at auction time.

Here is another variety of Bechtler coinage that could use a good discussion as to what is “right-side up” on the reverse. If you hold the coin so that the C. in the name is at the 9 o'clock position, that places the R in RUTHERFORD at the same position and presents C. BECHTLER in an arc at the top of the coin, a prominent position. Of course, most illustrations have the family name beginning at 7 o'clock, which is also a suitable candidate for the correct die alignment, and is the alignment we used for this lot.

Obverse: NORTH CAROLINA GOLD. around, 250. at center, 20.C. below, fine beads at rim.
Reverse: C. BECHTLER, ASSAYER. around, RUTHERFORD in a circular style at center, tiny beads at rim.
Die Alignment: 360 degrees or medal turn.

PCGS Population: 3; 1 finer (AU-58).
NGC Census: 1; AU-58.
